Charley Character Design

UniWellBeing, a health technology company that specialises in student wellbeing, asked for help with the design of a new character that would be used within their App.  The client wanted the character to be friendly, intelligent and happy as well as being gender neutral.

The digital platform aims to provide early intervention and support the wellbeing and mental health of students whilst at University, delivering behaviour, tools and activities personalised for the individual student.

The end result needed to not only be eye-catching for users but also portray care and support. Beginning with greyscale drawings, we devised a robot character called Charley and concentrated on the head, face and eyes whose features and characteristics would connect with users of the App.

The design of the robot was then developed further incorporating colour and was brought to life by animation. The chest area of the robot was used as a display screen where different images could be displayed depending on need such as a heart, countdown timer and so on – used as a visual reference by users as part of a feature of the App.
